1/27/08 Our First Competition
Sunday, January 27th, 2008My husband Kyle and I decided to try our hand at the “Best use of 12 Roses” Competition at Koehler and Dramm this year. I had this grand idea in my head for a while and had countless drawings of how I was going to design it, but after this week of being so creative, I was absolutely drained and didn’t feel like taking the time to execute my idea. I ended up with a likeness of what I was going for, but nothing what I’d envisioned. I wanted it to be like a corset on the back of a wedding dress with the stems of the roses as the strings, the sticks as the gown, and the Plumosa Fern as the veil. Whatever, I learned a ton and now I know what to expect for next year and will have fun doing it. Kyle vowed to compete ever year and that the theme of his arrangement would be in honor of his true love in life, beer. This year was a pint of foamy beer with beer dripping down the side. He titled it, “Chug-a-Lug”…Love it! Next year I feel a beer hat coming, but he always surprises me with his creativity.

Saturday, January 26th, 2008The sweetest gal in town, Tara is having a baby! (see blog entry ‘Tara and Steve ‘06′) Tara’s shower was great- it’s all about the details with these girls. Here’s pictures of the topiary I made for her as well as special gift wrapping. We are so excited to meet this little girl!
PS- I think Carra is a great name:)
My first displays 1/22/08
Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to do a display for my wholesaler, Koehler and Dramm. I was told I could use anything in the store I wanted. I was literally running up and down the aisles grabbing loads of neat vases, tiles, urns, fabric, feathers, beaded garlands, and permanent botanicals. I felt like I was on a timed game show but the reality was I could take as long as I wanted.
My very talented friend, Amanda, and I worked well together creating an Indian themed display using rich browns, golds, reds, and oranges. I wanted to start by draping a sheer fabric from the ceiling to separate our display from all the others. We enhanced it with the beaded garland and feathers to “drip” from the ceiling. I used the tiles as a make-shift rug. We placed a large gate on top of a table that was covered with fabrics and placed various items for sale everywhere. Sandy, AIFD and buyer for K&D, liked the display so much, she asked if we could do another one. Having as much fun as we were, we gladly accepted and came up with a tropical theme with hot reds, oranges, and greens using Orchids and leaves, again basing with a pretty, sheer, red fabric. Thanks Sandy for letting us play!
1/11/08 Janelle and Matthew
Friday, January 18th, 2008Janelle and Matthew came to me on a nice summer day to plan their wedding flowers…..ahhhhh, summer- I miss you! Anyway, we planned a wedding where everything was used twice, once at the ceremony and once at the reception to get the most bang for their buck! The gorgeous front stair railings of the church were draped with lush garland of three types of greens; Salal, Plumosa Fern, and Seeded Eucalyptus- my favorite, and accented by a ribbon bow of their wedding color, black. I adorned the doors with shades of red roses and black ribbon and sprinkled the entryway with a large amount of red Rose petals. Inside guests were greeted by a guest book accented with flowers. The church is spectacular and warm, take a look- you’ll see what I mean. http://nwc.nwc.edu/display/795 The pews were adorned with silver mint julep cups filled with red roses, red Hypericum berries, and greens accented with black ribbon bows and long streamers. The altar was warmed with large silver bows filled with red roses and pillar candles flanking a unity candle dripping with said roses. The candelabras has simple yet elegant swags of Myrtle, Leatherleaf Ferns, curly Willow, and red Hypericum berries accented with a black ribbon bow. After the gorgeous, very emotional ceremony (there was not a dry eye in site) we took all the decorations to the Landmark Center where we moved the center rose of the pew decoration and in it’s place, filled it with a votive candle, set the arrangement on a mirrored tile, put on a few more votives, and sprinkled red Rose petals in the center of the table. The head table got to of the large garland pieces from the front railings as well as the unity candle and two of the altar arrangements. The nummy cake table got the candelabra pieces, the gift table got another piece of the railing garland, the wreaths from the front doors were placed flat on high-top tables and filled with more pillar candles, and the other altar arrangement went near the guest book that again welcomed guests at the front entrance. Perfect!
A note from the bride:
Thank you for all you have done. The flowers were gorgeous, and we really appreciate all the work you did with transportation and set up. It really helped to make the day perfect!
-Janelle
A review from the bride as posted on Wedding Wire www.weddingwire.com:
It was really easy to work with this vendor. It was helpful to determine what the “dream” was, and then to work on making that dream affordable. We were able to decide what was important to us, and then how to make that work with our situation.
1/9/08 Linda’s Flowers
Wednesday, January 9th, 2008Deb, the lovely lady I work with (see post Deb and Mark from April 2006) was kind enough to think of sending flowers for her friend and our co-worker, Linda. Linda’s son, Kyle 2 years old, had to go in for surgery on his itty-bitty ears and throat; poor guy. So we thought a little burst of sunshine in the form of Tulips might brighten their day just a bit. Kyle’s surgery went well and he is recovering fine, as we knew he would. Take care!
